Privacy isn’t just a luxury, it’s a basic need for people to relax, feel comfortable, and be safe away from the prying eyes of passers-by, neighbors, and perhaps even those with ill intentions.
With that said, privacy screens are a quick and cost-effective solution. They can be installed in no time at all and don’t cost more than a couple hundred bucks.
And for those worried about it affecting the overall aesthetics of your landscape, we hate to break it to you, but your neighbor or whoever’s backyard you saw probably didn’t have a very good landscaper helping them out.
When done right, privacy screens should match your home and landscape’s style to not only not look bad, but complement your existing aesthetics.
Here at
Boise Landscaping Company, we have the best landscapers Boise has to offer. Our team of expert landscapers will analyze your outdoor space and its surroundings and come up with a customized landscape screen to ensure that it looks great and reflects your style and needs.
And of course, we’ll take care of the materials and installation, so everything is taken care of for you, from start to finish.
Whatever style you’re looking for, modern, traditional, Roman, whatever, we’ve got the know-how and expertise to bring it to life. We’ve also got a myriad of materials for you to choose from.
Natural wood: Natural woods include teak, redwood, cedar, and so on. Natural woods are quite durable, and are naturally resistant to weather conditions, decay, and pests. Depending on the type of wood exactly and the treatment done on the wood, the lifespan can be anywhere from 10-30 years. Natural woods, being natural, bring natural beauty to your outdoor space. And if you need to suit your property’s style, you can paint the natural wood too. The only con is that to prevent termites from eating away at the wood, or natural rotting, regular maintenance has to be done.
Composite wood: Composite is a mix of wood and plastic. Composite wood is even more durable. It’s highly resistant to rotting and inclement weather, as well as pests. The lifespan of composite wood is usually around 25-30 years. And you’re going to be glad to hear that minimal maintenance is required. Of course, all these come at a price. Composite wood is also more costly. However, with the time, effort, and possibly money saved by doing a lot less maintenance, composite wood is well worth the higher initial cost.
Viny (PVC): Given that vinyl is 100% man-made, it doesn’t rot and is very resistant to pests. As such, it’s very durable, with its lifespan ranging anywhere from 20-30 years. Minimal maintenance is needed, and since it’s man-made, you can have it in tons of different styles. The catch is that vinyl doesn’t look natural, which may or may not be a con, but vinyl’s quality also varies widely, which means there’s a chance of getting low-quality vinyl.
Metal: The different metals for privacy screens are steel, aluminum, and wrought iron. Out of these three, aluminum is the most durable. It doesn’t rust and can usually last 30 years at the least. As for steel and wrought iron, they are quite tough, but can rust if not properly taken care of. These two materials usually last at least 20 years if properly maintained.
Bamboo: Bamboo is a very eco-friendly and cost-effective, but also not-so-durable option. Bamboo being bamboo, is also quite prone to damage from insects and moisture if not treated. Nevertheless, its lifespan isn’t too shabby, ranging from 5-10 years.
Fabric: Fabric is the most flexible and can be easily set up or removed. As you’d expect though, it’s not too durable. Even increment weather and fierce sunlight may cause damage to fabric. You may even have to remove it in extreme weather conditions. The amount of maintenance needed is also higher as compared to other materials. Fabric has a lifespan of 2-5 years depending on how good the fabric is and how bad the weather conditions are.
Glass: Glass is widely known to be very hard, but also brittle. Glass can withstand ridiculously high and low temperatures, so weather is no issue. Glass is very durable, assuming it’s not hit by hard objects, but that’s just the thing. All it takes is a single stone to break glass. If not hit by hard objects though, glass is super long-lasting, easily lasting up to 25 years or more, and with minimal maintenance needed besides cleaning dust and dirt off. Since glass is transparent, it serves more as protection against weather elements while not obstructing any of your views.
Stone, brick, and concrete: These are the most steady materials of all. They’re heavy and bulky, but that’s exactly why they’ll last the longest. They’re the most durable and are almost immune to fire, weather elements, and pests. In fact, their lifespan easily spans over 50 years and with no maintenance needed! The only con is that installation is no mean feat, and once installed, removal will be both very troublesome and costly, so it requires a bit more consideration than the other materials.
Living walls: Living walls are, as the name suggests, walls of plants. Common plants include ivy, jasmine, and climbing roses. The durability varies from plant to plant, as well as the amount of maintenance and nutrients you provide them. However, just as plants never truly die as long as their seeds grow new plants, as long as you maintain living walls correctly, their offspring will take over when they die, meaning the lifespan of living walls is theoretically infinite with correct maintenance. Living walls, being plants, also bring natural beauty to the table.
And that’s it. Those are all the materials that we offer for privacy screens. Although privacy screens are only a small part of your outdoor area, it’s crucial to get even small features like this right, so that your entire outdoor area comes together to paint a masterpiece.
