Sod Installation

Looking for a cheap, fast, and healthy way for a green lawn in no time at all?

Sod installation is not only faster but also healthier than seeding a lawn from scratch.

Here at
Boise Landscaping Company, we’re a firm believer in the benefits of sod installation. Here are all the reasons why we recommend sod installation if you have the means for it.

No wait time:
Nobody likes looking at a barren plot of land, not you, not your family, not your friends, and certainly not potential homebuyers.

It’s not just about instant gratification. A barren plot of land can’t be used for anything much, so if you choose seeding, you’re looking at months of outdoor play, exercise, and enjoyment lost.

The bigger problem though, is that if you’re looking to sell your home, you just can’t afford to be showing interested parties a barren lawn. It sends a message that you didn’t take care of your garden properly, which by extension suggests that you may not have maintained other parts of your property properly too.

As such, for both homeowners who want to make the most of their outdoor space and those looking to sell their home, you can’t afford not to have sod installation done.

Quick usability:
Another factor to consider is that with seeding, even after grass has started growing, it’s best to avoid any usage whatsoever to avoid uprooting the plants. With sodding, there’s structural integrity immediately upon installation.

In other words, your lawn can be used for light activities as soon as installation is done. Within a few more weeks, the roots of the sod will have established themselves, allowing for heavier use.

Erosion control: Soil erosion is when soil is loosened and washed away by rain or blown away by wind. This is a problem because the top layer, which is removed, is usually the most fertile, so the remaining soil is less suitable for plants to grow, which results in poorer-growing plants.

Soil erosion tends to be a bigger problem in sloped terrains and regions where rainfall is heavy and frequent. In some cases, young plants can even be washed away.

Sod helps prevent this by covering the soil, preventing any direct contact between the rain and the soil, and by stabilizing the soil with the roots that establish themselves quickly.

Of course, seeding can achieve this too, but along the way, some of the seeds and even young plants may be washed away, slowing down the process. And by the time the plants from the seeds are fully grown out, soil erosion can have already removed a substantial amount of soil and even damaged your landscape, both of which can be costly to remedy.

Resistance to diseases: One of the biggest advantages that sod has over seeding is its resistance to diseases. Given that sod is grown in careful, controlled conditions, and that the plants used for sod are specially chosen for their durability and resistance to diseases, it’s only natural that sod is tougher and more resistant to diseases.

It’s like giving your pet the best pet food, sending it for grooming and frequent health check-ups, bringing it for walks, and giving it the best vitamins. Wouldn’t your pet be a lot healthier than a stray dog or cat left to fend for itself?

Furthermore, as sod is already fully grown, it’s definitely going to be more able to resist diseases than young seedlings. But even when fully grown, lawns created through seeding still tend to be less able to resist diseases.

Water efficiency: Upon installation, sod begins to establish its roots quickly. As the roots grow deeper, they can reach more nutrients and water. Less water is wasted too, as sod also reduces water runoff.

This means that with sod, the amount of watering required is significantly lesser than with seeding. In the long run, this not only helps conserve water, but also lessens the effort needed for watering the plants and of course, reduces your water bills.

Flexibility: It’s also worth noting that sod can be installed at any time and season of the year, including winter if it’s not too cold. With seeding, timing can be quite sensitive, as given the length of the project, it’s not just winter itself, but the months leading up to winter that have to be avoided.

What this means is that if you miss the timing to perform seeding, you have to wait till the few months before winter and winter itself are over to perform the seeding. Even then, you’d still have to wait months for the seeds to grow out.

So as you can see, the flexibility of sod may seem insignificant, but actually gives sodding a huge advantage over seeding your lawn.

Neatness: A rather obvious pro of choosing sod over seeding is that since it’s only one type of grass, your lawn will look the same all around. In contrast, even if you use the same seeds throughout the lawn, it’s hard to achieve uniformity, at least in the initial stages, because not all seeds will grow at the same rate.

Cost savings in the long run: Besides the point on preventing soil erosion, sod installation, while more costly initially, can actually save you money in the long run.

Due to the immediate density of sod, it’s harder for weed to grow, which reduces the need and costs for herbicides, as well as the labor costs.

Also, sod has a much lower failure rate than seeding, which can often fail due to many factors, whether it’s wrong watering practices, diseases, or pests.

Plus, with the increased disease resistance of sod, you spend less on disease treatment.

To sum it up, there are tons of reasons to choose sod installation over seeding. Instant gratification, resistance to diseases, neatness, you name it.
